Looks a strong pace.
With a Heavy track likely there may be a bias at play, so at this stage I’m not discounting those drawn to sit 3-wide in the run, in fact it’s possible it will be an advantage.
Leading Contenders
Jamaican Rain ($4.60)
Scratched from last week to run here.
Winner of 5 of her 10 starts she went to a new peak on a heavy 10 at Cranbourne 2 ago before backing it up with a slightly inferior number at Moonee Valley, but the fact that she was able to jump straight from the provincials to a strong city class Victorian win holds her in good stead here.
Likely to go to a new peak.
Not discounting her for having to sit 3-wide at this stage and if that is fair, or indeed the place to be she is the rightful favourite.
Niccanova ($7.00)
Winner of the Group 3 Fred Best Classic in 2017 he backed that up with a 3rd in the Queensland Guineas before a long spell till March this year.
He came back for just the one run winning at Doomben before another spell leading into this run.
Obviously, soundness is an issue, but his talent can’t be questioned.
Set for the race and was the first horse backed when markets went up.
Ulmann ($8.50)
His career peak came on a bog Warrnambool track in the Wangoom of 2017 so the wet track won’t worry him.
Two starts ago he was a strong 2nd, once again on a heavy track in listed class at Doomben.
The conditions won’t be an issue and he is likely to be suited by the strong pace.
I’m A Rippa ($6.50)
Drawn wide but looks to be the clear leader, albeit with a reasonable amount of pressure.
He is in career peak form having reached a similar mark his last 3 winning the Eye Liner, BRC Sprint and a close 2nd in the Spear Chief over this track and distance on a soft 7.
If he repeats or advances, he is the one to beat.
The Verdict
A very tough race with the prevailing conditions likely to be the determining factor but with a nice long run to the first turn there is plenty of time for I’m A Rippa to work to the lead.
The other three in the betting have drawn the three outside barriers, so there is some query over all of them.
Looks a very tough race.
