News:

Smart filly Kalabek earned a Queensland campaign with an impressive trackwork gallop on Tuesday morning.

Kalabek scored an exciting win at Caulfield on Easter Monday and trainer Brent Stanley has now decided to test the two-year-old during the Brisbane winter carnival.

The filly is nominated for Saturday’s Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes at Caulfield but her work has convinced Stanley to shoot for bigger targets.

“She worked exceptionally well this morning so we’ll miss Caulfield and run her in Brisbane in a fortnight,” Stanley said.

“While she’s going as well as she is, we’ll give her a chance in Group races.”

Stanley said the Group Two Champagne Classic at Doomben on May 10 appealed as the best option for Kalabek’s next run and he would aim Kalabek at the Group One JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 7.

His long-term goals for Kalabek include the Thousand Guineas in the spring.

Stanley also has Group One ambitions for Veuvelicious despite her unplaced run in the Champagne Stakes last Saturday.

Veuvelicious had an interrupted run when sixth to Go Indy Go at Randwick but Stanley said the filly returned to his stable in good order.

“She’s pulled up great and she’s already in the paddock spelling,” Stanley said.

Stanley will also aim Veuvelicious at the Thousand Guineas as part of a spring preparation geared towards the VRC Oaks.
