I Am Me impresses with new Canterbury record

I Am Me has stamped itself as a sprinter on the rise with victory in the $160,000 Listed Canterbury Sprint (1200m) on Sunday.

Trained by Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace, I Am Me ($1.60 favourite) set a new mark over the distance at Canterbury of 1:08.45, more than half a second faster than Hoystar’s previous record set in 2008.

Fortune also favoured jockey Andrew Adkins who took the ride after Tommy Berry was unable to make the 54-kilo weight.

This win notched four-straight for the four-year-old mare by I Am Invincible and a first victory at black type level.

“She’s certainly talented,” Adkins said.

“I actually trialed her for the first time this preparation and she gave me a beautiful feel in that trial.

“Unfortunate for Tommy that I was able to pick up the ride bit I’m grateful for it.

I Am Me jumped cleanly from the barriers though raced keenly early.

“She was certainly the best horse in the race and I knew I was going to be able to burn the candle at both ends,” he added.

“She was very strong late and bigger and better things to come.”

I Am Me won by over a length from the Gary Portelli-trained Spaceboy ($7 unibet) with Dragonstone ($10) in third.
