In form South Australian stayer to miss Banjo Paterson Series Final

South Australian trainer Travis Doudle was hoping to test his stayer Not Usual Glorious at Flemington after three unbeaten runs in his home state.

But the prospects of a good track means Doudle has decided to miss the Banjo Paterson Series Final (2600m) on Saturday.

A former New Zealand galloper, Not Usual Glorious has had three starts for his new trainer, all in Adelaide, where the track has been rated slow, or heavy, ground Doudle was hoping for on Saturday.

“I really like him and I think he can win me a nice race,” Doudle said.

“But I feel on a good track, Grand Promenade is a pretty smart horse with a better turn of foot.

“I think on Soft 7 or on a Heavy track, that’s when I think my bloke might shine.”

Doudle said Not Usual Glorious was likely to be entered for benchmark races at Gawler and Caulfield next Saturday and depending on track conditions could be seen in Melbourne.

“I might bring him to Caulfield, if there’s a little bit of rain,” Doudle said.

“It’s a benchmark 78 and he’ll get a bit of weight, but he’s not going to be up against a Grand Promenade or those sorts of horses.

“We do want to look after him and maybe if we got lucky and it was a wet spring, we might have a bit of fun with him and win a couple of races over there.”

Doudle said Mr Pocket heads across the border to run in the Mahogany Challenge Final (2500m) with Dean Holland aboard.

“The owners want to try him over there, so he can go over, have the run, and then maybe spell somewhere in Victoria,” Doudle said.

“He looks magnificent, but needs to improve a bit to trouble them.”
