James McDonald steers Trifaccia to breakthrough win

Placed in the Reisling Stakes as a two-year-old, Godolphin have long held an opinion of Trifaccia who showcased a strong turn of foot to win the second event at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

“She’s been running in better class races,” Stable Representative Darren Beadman said.

“You’re running in Group 2 and Group 3 type races and they take you out of your comfort zone a little bit but she is starting to get her act together now and hopefully she can go onto bigger and better things.”

Slowly away from barrier 2, jockey James McDonald snuck runs along the fence around the home turn.

Needing clear room in the straight, space emerged at the 300m and the odds-on favourite capitalised, lengthening well and hitting the front inside the 100m as she drew clear for a three-quarter length success.

“She was a little bit sticky away and looked in a bit of an awkward spot but her class prevailed today and it was good to see her get on the board and win,” Beadman said.

“He just rode the horse and kept her in a nice rhythm. She’s always had a nice turn of foot so I think he (McDonald) knew he had plenty under the bonnet, was able to just take the runs as they came and not be too anxious about her.”

Wednesday marked the third time James McDonald had partnered the daughter of I Am Invincible with their previous two outings returning minor placings including her third to Glistening in the 2021 Reisling Stakes.

“She’s been a tricky one,” McDonald said.

“It looked like the world was going to be her oyster early but just lost her way as they can do.

“She is only going to get better with some confidence under her belt and hopefully go on with the job.”

Trifaccia was the first leg of a winning double for Godolphin at Warwick Farm with Quatenus taking out Race 5, a heat of the rising star apprentice series under the guidance of Reece Jones who also enjoyed a double.
