Krakarib out to turn fortunes around in Talindert Stakes 2023

With one target having already been achieved, trainer Simon Zahra is eyeing another with Krakarib.

Standing in the way is the performance of the two-year-old in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Krakarib won the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day and Zahra would like to add the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes to the colt’s record.

That 1200m contest at Sandown on Saturday week is still on the cards, providing Krakarib wins or runs well down the straight at Flemington.

“We’ve opted to run him up the straight, which he enjoys,” Zahra said.

“If he wins, or runs well, we’ll probably back him up in the Blue Diamond, otherwise he can go out for a bit of a break as he’s been up a long time.

“He only had two-and-a-half weeks off after the spring. The Maribyrnong was our target which we got.

“The aim has been to peak him on Blue Diamond Day, so hopefully we see a big improvement from him on Saturday and we’ll be happy to back him up and have a crack at the Diamond.”

Krakarib had two starts in the spring.

After a debut sixth in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial (1000m), Krakarib came out to win the Maribyrnong Stakes, defeating Little Brose, on November 1.

After a brief spell, Krakarib went to Sandown to contest the colts and gelding’s division of the Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) on January 26.

Zahra said that race did not turn out as expected.

“He was a bit underdone there as it come around a bit quick,” Zahra said.

“We rode him a bit aggressively as we led on him when he won at Flemington.

“The way he was trialling he was going like a 1200-metre horse, but he got banged around a couple of times on the turn and in the straight and he knocked up a bit, so it was a bit of a forgive run.”
