Horse Racing: Lindsay Park returns to Pakenham

The Lindsay Park stable of Ben, Will and J D Hayes are about to take back under their wing a previous base they departed when their father David moved to Hong Kong.

Lindsay Park’s stables on-course at Pakenham is back under the Hayes name after Peter Moody rented the complex following his return to training in 2020.

Moody has since gone on to build his own complex at Pakenham and moved out of the Lindsay Park stables on the weekend.

Ben Hayes said he and his brothers intend to do some maintenance work on the stables and hopefully have a team of 12 horses in work there in coming weeks.

“We’ll fix up all the stables as it’s hard to do when horses are there,” Hayes said.

“We plan to move in on April 10 when we’ll have about 12 horses arrive and we’ll slowly fill up.

“We’ve got room for around 50 horses down, but we’re not planning on having that many there.”

Hayes said he had noted Pakenham’s training facilities had improved in the almost four years since the stable last trained there.

He said prior to his father leaving for Hong Kong, Lindsay Park had considerable success training out of Pakenham.

“We know they work and they’re in a great location,” Hayes said.

“Pakenham has improved their facilities in the three or four years we’ve been out and we’re looking forward to going back.

“It’s another asset to our business and we’ll be able to target those meetings like Sale and those Gippsland meetings a lot more easily.

“It’s much easier to go from Pakenham and when the night meetings start again it will make travel much easier.”

Hayes said the stable had grown in recent years where they now have 220 horses in work, including pre-trainers.

He said every year had been an improvement on the previous year.

“We’ve already trained the same number of city winners as last year, and we’ve still got time this year to build on that,” Hayes said.

“We, as a team, have worked hard, and we’ve got a good team around us.

“We want to keep improving and just do the best we can.”
