Chris Waller has two pre-post Rosehill favourites as well as six runners in the Lord Mayor’s Cup but he concedes his best chance may be elsewhere at a meeting that has significance to his career.

Waller likes restricted-class galloper You’ll Never as the horse most likely to deliver him a win as he continues his march towards a fourth successive city trainers’ premiership.

“He ran a terrific race first-up when he just got beaten in a photo finish,” Waller said.

You’ll Never is a $6 second favourite to make amends in the Candana Bathrooms Handicap as Waller celebrates the anniversary meeting of his best day at races.

At the same fixture last year, Waller trained five winners and after accepting with 19 horses on Saturday, he still has 18 in contention to run across seven races.

You’ll Never has a modest strike rate of two wins from 16 starts but Waller has no doubt the four-year-old is an improved racehorse in the early stages of his third racing campaign.

“He’s come back better this preparation and he will be very hard to beat,” Waller said.

Rugged Cross (Power Access Handicap) and I’m Imposing (Lord Mayor’s Cup) are the two Waller-trained horses heading early markets.

Import Rugged Cross has done all his Australian racing from Waller’s Melbourne yard and he makes his Sydney debut after a win and three placings down south.

I’m Imposing has already been well backed to win the Lord Mayor’s Cup, a race Waller has stacked with stayers who have been fantastic servants for his stable.

“I know a lot of other stables would have moved them on by now but our system tends to keep them racing a bit longer as well as keeping them competitive,” Waller said.
