Mair scraps Golden Slipper plans

Trainer Mick Mair will recommend scrapping Golden Slipper plans for General Jackson following the youngster’s defeat at Eagle Farm.

Well backed to start $3.80 favourite, General Jackson was edged out by a long neck by the Tony Gollan-trained Tear It Up ($6) in Saturday’s Hamilton Hotel Handicap (1200m).

In a blanket finish, Wonderful Jester ($6) was only a short head away third.

A Sydney trip was earmarked for General Jackson after the son of General Nediym displayed blistering speed to win at Doomben at his previous start.

“There’s no point taking him down to Sydney if he can’t beat this lot,” Mair said.

“I was going to take him down for the Skyline and hopefully the Golden Slipper but we can’t now.

“I’ll have to talk it over first with his owner but I usually win.”

The Group Three Skyline Stakes (1200m) will be run at Randwick on March 17, three weeks before the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill.

Mair offered no excuses for General Jackson’s defeat after the Caloundra trainer removed blinkers in an attempt to have him settle better.

“He fired up too hard with the blinkers on the day he won at Doomben so I took them off so he could settle better,” Mair said.

Gollan missed Tear It Up’s win after being stuck in traffic on the way down from Toowoomba to Brisbane.

Tear It Up led all the way to win by nearly five lengths at his debut at Toowoomba on February 18.

Jockey Ric McMahon allowed the daughter of Choisir to settle back in the field before pouncing on the leaders late.

“It was a super win,” McMahon said.

“I thought General Jackson would have gone a little harder in front.

“But she showed she’s a true professional and did everything right.”
