Melbourne Cup 2018 hopeful still recovering

Melbourne Cup hopeful Cross Counter remains restricted to light walking duties after veterinary attention for a cut to his left fore leg.

But connections of the Charlie Appleby-trained stayer are looking for the horse to resume regular training on Monday.

The horse sustained the cut last Sunday.

“The stable has advised that on the weekend the horse will walk and trot, with a view to resuming regular training on Monday, 22 October,” RV stewards said.

“Cross Counter’s progress will continue to be monitored by veterinarians over the coming days and an update will be provided.”

Cross Counter is at $17 for the Melbourne Cup on November 6.

“Fortunately, time is on our side with this,” Appleby told the Godolphin website.

“I’m not concerned about his fitness level as he was race-fit when he left for Australia and he had been ticking over nicely after arrival.”
