English stayer Gold Mount has been retired after suffering a suspensory injury during the Caulfield Cup.
Trained by Ian Williams, Gold Mount finished 12th, beaten just over four lengths, in Saturday’s $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m).
He had been scheduled to progress to the 2019 Melbourne Cup before the injury was confirmed.,
“It’s a tough game, and setbacks are part of the sport, but Gold Mount will enjoy a peaceful retirement,” Ian Williams Racing said on Twitter.
“He gave us some great times this year, and thank you for all kind messages and support.”
South Australian Derby winner Qafila has also been ruled out of the Melbourne Cup with the Lindsay Park stable telling stewards on Monday the four-year-old mare would not be running in the November 5 race.
Qafila, who finished 17th in the Caulfield Cup, was 27th in the latest Melbourne Cup order of entry released on Monday.
