The Melbourne Cup field is set and ready to go, with a number of horses affected by the barrier draw. Fiorente drew well at five, with last year’s runner-up looking to do one better in 2013. Some of the other favourites were not so lucky, however, with Mount Athose allotted barrier 22 in the field of 24 and last year’s winner, Grey Moon, drawing barrier 10.
Some of the other horses adversely affected by the draw were the 2011 runner-up Cadeaux and recent Lexus Stakes winner Ruscello, who drew barriers 23 and 24 respectively. Voueuse De Couers will also be running from the outside after drawing barrier 21. 2011 winner Dunaden also had a bad draw, with the champion running from the other side of the field in barrier 1.
Fiorente was already the early favourite for this year’s Cup, and this favourable barrier draw will only add to expectations. The Irish-bred six-year-old is trained by Gai Waterhouse, who is looking to bring home her first ever Melbourne Cup. Another iconic Australian trainer, Bart Cummings, wont have a runner at this year’s Cup after Precedence came up short in 25th position in a field of 24.

RACE TIPS
So important that riders are able to find a spot down the straight the first time and get their mounts to settle as early as possible. Some drawn wide will have to commit from the jump and go forward and make their own luck, or drop to the tail and be ridden for some. From gate nine, Oliver on Seville will have many more opportunities available to him. Seville was good in the Metropolitan and went as well as he could have been in the Cox Plate, a race Team Williams have used as a final hit-out with success in the past. Drawn well and Bowman strike rate for the stable is a good one. Brown Panther was heading this way last year but connections decided to given him another 12 months and their patience could be rewarded here. His last start was with this race in mind and his previous two starts were strong wins and should be used as the best guide. Dandino could not have been any more impressive in his Caulfield Cup and gate four will give Ryan Moore the opportunity to have him placed to advantage throughout. Finally, can’t leave Fiorente out. His form is first rate and has the jockey, gate and experience required to figure prominently.

In the news:
Bart Cummings won’t have a runner in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
The winner of 12 Melbourne Cups, Cummings, who now trains in partnership with his grandson James, was hoping to get Precedence into this year’s field.
Precedence was one of 33 final acceptors for the race, but the Moonee Valley Gold Cup winner was left as the 25th horse in the ballot order.
The Victoria Racing Club committee declined to use its discretionary power to include Precedence in the final field of 24.
Lexus Stakes winner Ruscello will run in the race, taking to nine the total number of foreign-trained gallopers whose connections made the $49,500 final payment on Saturday.
The final horse into the Cup from the order of entry was the Peter Moody-trained Ibicenco.
This year’s Cup field contains only five horses which began their lives in Australia.
