In the news:

There is more at stake than just the $350,000 prize money in the Listed Mornington Cup.

The race also carries with it an automatic Caulfield Cup entry for the winner.

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller will have two runners in Wednesday’s 2400m race, with imports He’s Your Man and Instrumentalist chasing the ballot exemption for the $3 million Caulfield Cup in the spring.

He’s Your Man is yet to register an Australian victory from three starts but the stayer steps up to a suitable distance while Instrumentalist will be chasing his fourth win from his past six starts in his first stakes test.

Waller was considering the Hobart Cup for Instrumentalist but has opted to keep him in Victoria to run at Mornington.

He’s Your Man raced on the speed in the Cup Prelude (2000m) last start and finished fourth behind promising stayer Prince Of Penzance who will be among his rivals again on Wednesday.

“He’s Your Man has come through his last race well. He was just a bit too handy and didn’t let down,” Waller’s Melbourne stable representative Justine Hales said.

“Hopefully this time he gets a bit of cover and will be able to run on.

“Stepping up in distance won’t worry him at all.

“Instrumentalist is just so tough and honest. He’s Your Man might have a little bit more class but Instrumentalist is a real trier.”

The Mornington Cup has attracted 16 nominations including the Gai Waterhouse-trained Australia Day Cup winner Travolta and talented stablemate Laidback Larry.

Peter Moody will run Lord Stakes winner Oregon Spirit, who was second to Prince Of Penzance in the Prelude, and Macedonian.

Darren Weir said Prince Of Penzance would be an acceptor.

“The final decision will be left to his owner but at this stage Mornington is looking good,” Weir told Racing Victoria.

“He’s come through his win really good. Michelle (Payne) galloped him yesterday and he went well.”

The Mornington meeting also features the Listed Hareeba Stakes and the $250,000 Inglis Premier for two-year-olds.
