My Shabella debut could be delayed again

A decision on whether My Shabella makes a belated start to her career at Warwick Farm will be made after she works on Wednesday.

The filly is among the entrants for Saturday’s Widden Stakes (1100m) more than four months after trainer Gerald Ryan had her primed for the Gimcrack Stakes.

My Shabella was a late withdrawal after she became stirred up in her stall and emerged cut and bruised from her encounter with the barrier supports.

She is one of 10 two-year-old fillies nominated for the Widden with Magic Millions winner Driefontein and Gimcrack winner Hussousa also in the mix.

“I’ll make a decision after she works in the morning,” Ryan said.

“I’ve got no clues whether she can handle a wet track and we can always keep her for a race at Canterbury next week.

“She was second favourite for the Gimcrack and it was unfortunate she had to come out.

“I was very pleased with her trial and she is a lot stronger than she was in the spring.”

Ryan said he rated My Shabella among his top two-year-olds which include Cavalry Rose who scored her second win from two career starts at Rosehill on Saturday.

My Shabella won a barrier trial at Rosehill last week to earn her ticket back to the races.

Driefontein has not raced since she won last month’s Magic Millions from her Gai Waterhouse-trained stablemate No Looking Back after a controversial protest.

The 10 entries for the Canonbury Stakes for colts and geldings on Saturday are headed by the Waterhouse-trained Raceway.

The early favourite for the Golden Slipper, Raceway displayed his raw talent at his first start at Warwick Farm last month with a dominant win despite doing things wrong.

He is syndicated by Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds whose distinctive purple and white colours were worn to Golden Slipper glory by Sebring in 2008 and also by Driefontein.
