It’s hard to know exactly where Runson sits regarding this race.
He has won 2 of his last 4 at the track and distance but failed in his other 2 runs.
As a younger horse, I never expected him to show the strength to be competitive at 1400m but as a mature five-year-old he has certainly come to a peak at this distance.
I doubt he can repeat the extreme figure he went to last start, but nor does he have to.
Even if he regresses 2-3L, he has a margin over the field here.
The market has correctly deduced that his biggest opposition comes from those lightly raced runners down on or near the limit weight.
However, I can’t quite get them to a value proposition.
He’s no star but in an open race, I’m happy to take the big odds Runson.
Given his inconsistent form, I’ll just back him straight out.
I generally only like to back consistent horses on place terms.
His record of 7 wins and just 3 placings from 21 starts backs up this theory that he either wins or disappoints.
Let’s just hope it’s the former on this occasion.
