Up-and-coming sprinter Our Kobison has broken the 1200-metre Rosehill track record, bettering the mark held for almost 30 years by top galloper All Our Mob .
While the firm ground was producing quick times throughout the day, Our Kobison was brilliant in carting the field up to leader Dipsy Doodle then finding another gear to career away and score by 3-1/4 lengths.
He stopped the clock at 1:08.30 seconds, 0.09 seconds quicker than All Our Mob’s effort when he won the 1997 Group 2 Canterbury Stakes.
Winning trainer Angela Davies was awed to see Our Kobison break such a long-standing record.
“How proud am I of that. That’s a great effort for that horse and we’ve done a great job. Meg, who rides him, who strapped him today, does all the work on this horse and he’s not easy,” Davies said.
“He’s been a work in progress to keep him calm on the track but he is getting better, he’s settling.”
James Mcdonald was booked to ride Our Kobison in Saturday’s Schweppes Handicap but was stood down from his final five rides after injuring his foot halfway through the program.
Kerrin Mcevoy picked up the mount and said Our Kobison showed all the hallmarks of being a smart sprinter in the making.
“Great win. It was my first ride on him, and he showed he’s a lovely little sprinter,” McEvoy said.
“He’s got a good attitude, good cruising speed, covers the ground well.
“I knew we were zipping along and he was running a tiny bit keen, but full credit to the horse because I just sat for a bit turning (for home) and then asked him for an effort and he still hit the line.”
Our Kobison is the second horse to break a Rosehill track record in the past few weeks with Naval College establishing a new 2000-metres mark on January 13.
Davies will talk to Our Kobison’s owners to determine their next move but says the Provincial-Midway Championships is among several options.
“I’m not sure yet, but we’ll let the dust settle and have a lengthy discussion,” she said.
“Today he certainly raised the bar. Today really showed me this horse might be something special.
“I think he’s got so much talent, untapped.”
