Outback Miss set for Lightning Stakes at Morphettville

The Mick Price and Michael Kent stable has split their two-year-old fillies between a race in Melbourne and one in Adelaide.

Outback Miss and Spicy Margs were both among acceptances for the Opus Group Handicap (1000m) at Morphettville and the Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

Price said Outback Miss would represent the stable in Adelaide while Spicy Margs would stay home, having already been scratched from the Lightning Stakes.

“She (Outback Miss) was always going across to Adelaide and the ownership group is all geared up to run,” Price said.

“And we’ve got Kayla Crowther to ride her.”

Outback Miss is unbeaten in two starts.

She was successful on debut on heavy ground at Bendigo before scoring on a soft track at Caulfield on June 24.

Price is unconcerned by the fact Outback Miss has not raced for five weeks.

“She’d had two runs and I wasn’t sure what to do with her,” Price said.

“I worked her on Saturday over a half-mile with Beau Mertens on and she worked OK, and I worked her in company the week before and she was good.

“It was a little spark for her and being a Stakes race (in Adelaide), it’s well worth the effort of trying to get some ‘Black Type’ for her.”

Price said the stable resisted taking Spicy Margs to Adelaide concerned with her temperament.

Spicy Margs resumed with a first-up win at Caulfield on July 8 and Price said the filly should be suited around Moonee Valley.

“I could possibly have taken her, but her temperament, it’s a bit hot,” Price said.

“So, she’s well-named ‘Spicy’, so I think she’s better off at home and will be hard to beat around Moonee Valley.

“I worked her last Tuesday and she worked ‘super’.

“Forget her first run when she was on her way down, so you can only judge her that second run.”
