Pinstripe Lane on way to Queensland Derby 2014

Damien Oliver will ride Queensland Derby-bound Pinstripe Lane in the Grand Prix Stakes with the colt booking his ticket to Brisbane with a Rosehill win.

Trainer Troy Corstens watched Saturday’s 1900m race for three-year-olds from Flemington and was delighted to see the son of Pins stamp his Derby credentials with a two-length win under apprentice Taylor Marshall.

“I was rapt with him and he’ll go to the Grand Prix in two weeks and then into the Derby after that,” Corstens said.

Pinstripe Lane finished down the track in the Victoria Derby in the spring after being placed in The Vase at Moonee Valley.

Corstens says the colt is now more seasoned and ready to step up this time around.

“He raced in the Derby last year and he probably wasn’t ready for that,” Corstens said.

“We gave him a good spell and really set him for the Queensland Derby. His number one target the whole preparation has been the Queensland Derby and now he’s going to get his chance.”

Pinstripe Lane is now an $8.50 chance in Derby betting alongside Saturday’s Rough Habit Plate winner Amexed with fillies Arabian Gold ($5.50) Hera ($5.50) and Telepathic ($6.50) the top three.

Corstens decided to run Pinstripe Lane in the right-handed direction in Sydney as a guide to his Brisbane prospects.

“If he ran a bad race he could always come back, rather than going all the way up and not know how you are going,” Corstens said.

“He just needed to dot the I’s and cross the T’s which he has done.”

His Rosehill win was a first metropolitan Saturday success for Corstens who will soon take over the training duties for the Malua Racing operation when John Sadler moves to Caulfield.

Although he has held a trainer’s licence for some time, Corstens has been happy to assume the role of general manager at Malua until now.

Pinstripe Lane gave Marshall the first of four winners at Rosehill, the first metropolitan Saturday meeting for the son of retired top jockey John Marshall.
