Pintoff takes out the 2021 Regal Roller Stakes

Former jumps jockey Richard Cully was at home on coach when he landed his first stakes win as a trainer on Saturday.

Cully celebrated the win of Pintoff in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield at home with his wife and young son watching the race on television.

“I’m no good at the races, so I just let him go down with Megan, the Irish lass that looks after him for us,” Cully said.

“It’s ridiculous, very, very good. I was sitting on the couch screaming with my wife and the young fella. There was plenty of screaming.”

Ridden by Declan Bates, Pintoff ($5) led throughout in scoring by a neck from Away Game ($5.50) with Brave Song ($41) a short-neck away third.

Pintoff had excellent Caulfield credentials leading into Saturday’s race with two wins and a second from his three previous runs at the track.

Those performances were on affected ground and with the track upgraded to a Good 3 during Saturday’s meeting, Cully had concerns as to how the sprinter would perform.

Bates described the win as special.

“I am absolutely delighted for Richard (Cully) and his team,” Bates said.

“They do a fantastic job and it is actually my first winner for them, so it wasn’t a bad way to get the first one up.

“My fella was a touch keen through the first 400 metres so I just let him roll up along at the top and it was only when I got to the front he came back and relaxed.

“From that point I was quite happy, I loved the way he just really extended off the bend so I knew at that point they were going to have to work to get to me.

“He was getting a little tired late but he had done enough, he was tough.”
