Popular bush jockey Darren Jones dies in race fall

Popular NSW jockey Darren Jones has died from injuries suffered in a three-horse fall at Warialda in the state’s north.

The 48-year-old Tamworth rider fell in the third race on Saturday in which he was riding the favourite Montague Clan.

Leanne Henry and apprentice Melanie Bolwell also fell and were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

“This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to Darren’s family and friends,” Peter V’landys, Racing NSW chief executive said.

Jones’ most recent winner was on Maybegrey at Narromine last Sunday.

Racing NSW steward Shane Cullen said Henry was suffering general soreness while Bolwell was momentarily unconscious.

The fall cast a shadow on the biggest day of racing in Sydney featuring the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick won by champion Winx.
