Prophet’s Thumb chasing a G1 in The Goodwood Handicap

After a luckless run in the Robert Sangster Stakes, Prophet’s Thumb will get one last chance at a Group 1 in The Goodwood at Morphettville.

Prophet’s Thumb was supposed to be heading to a life of a retirement following her last start but connections have decided to roll the dice once again in a Group 1 race.

The Anthony and Sam Freedman -trained daughter of I Am Invincible takes on 10 rivals in The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday, two weeks after finishing seventh in the Robert Sangster Stakes.

Brad Taylor, racing manager for the Freedman training team, said Prophet’s Thumb should have bowed out a Group 1 winner, or at least, Group 1 placed.

He said Craig Newitt erred in coming off the fence allowing the winner Instant Celebrity the rails when coming from behind Prophet’s Thumb.

“If she was Group 1 placed or a Group 1 winner last start, she wouldn’t be here,” Taylor said.

“We didn’t have to run here but she came through her last race so well, we thought it was worthwhile to have another throw at the stumps before she is retired.

“There is no harm in giving her one more run. She’s in really good order and if she can get a bit more luck on Saturday, it may be her chance to feature in a Group 1.”

Taylor said Saturday’s race may not be a vintage Goodwood, but noted the quality at the top of the field.

“Behemoth was in good form during the spring and autumn, but is coming back to 1200 metres and obviously Gytrash is there but is coming back off a set-back.

“I don’t think it was the original plan until a few weeks ago, so he might be vulnerable, but he is a very good galloper.

“If he turns up in 90 per cent order, he’s going to be very hard to beat.

“It would be nice if we could get a bit of luck.

“She’s going very well this preparation, even though her form card might not show that, but if you look at all her runs, they’ve been super.”
