Rachel King to captain Shergar Cup 2024 team

Rachel King won’t be in action at Randwick on Saturday and with good reason.

The Sydney-based jockey will make a hit-and-run visit to her native England this week to compete in the prestigious Shergar Cup at Ascot where she has been chosen to captain the Rest of the World team.

It will be King’s second recent visit to the famous English course after riding at the Royal Ascot carnival in June where she finished runner-up aboard outsider Strutting in the Sandringham Stakes.

“I am thrilled to be, not only invited to compete in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, but also to captain the Rest of the World team,” King said in a statement on Wednesday.

“It’s a unique and exciting event that brings together some of the best talent in horse racing from around the globe.

“To lead such a talented group of jockeys and to be back at Ascot so soon is a tremendous honour.”

The Shergar Cup is an annual event that features four teams of riders from around the globe.

King will be joined on the all-girls Rest of the World team by Japan’s Nanako Fujita and South Africa’s Rachel Venniker before returning to Australia in time to ride at the Randwick-Kensington meeting next Wednesday.
