The $700,000 Ranvet Stakes is the first of five Group 1’s on the card at Rosehill on Saturday as punters prepare for the third stoush between defending champion Addeybb and Verry Elleegant.
William Haggas’ Irish import wore down Chris Waller’s mighty mare in the final stages last year, and it is no surprise to find the champion stayer at very short odds with another wet track expected.
After the cancellation of last week’s meeting, this race has certainly become a lot more interesting with 2020 Cox Plate champion Sir Dragonet and last year’s Golden Eagle winner Colette both accepting.

Addeybb
Adeybb was well-supported in Ladbrokes’ All-In Ranvet Stakes market ahead of his journey back to Australia.
The Irish raider won this same race by a narrow margin to Saturday’s rival Verry Elleegant last year before gapping the Waller mare by three-lengths a fortnight later in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick.
Since then, the champion Irish raider has gone on to finish runner-up in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales Stakes back at Ascot, followed by consecutive wins in the Listed Doonside Cup and the Group 1 Champion Stakes during the Spring.
The son of Pivotal tends to do his best racing fresh and there is no question he has improved since he won this race 12 months ago.
With an eye towards another Queen Elizabeth, the seven-year-old looks extremely tough to beat with an extra week to prepare.
Sir Dragonet
The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace team have chosen to target their champion stayer at this week’s Ranvet with an extra week to prepare.
The reigning Cox Plate winner was originally nominated for last week’s initial running of the race, but the stable thought better of it following Sir Dragonet’s disappointing second-up run in the All-Star Mile at The Valley.
The son of Camelot has failed to fire in both runs this Autumn, but he does get a chance to bounce-back on Saturday with another wet track expected.
Glen Boss jumping back into the saddle will only help his chances, but until he shows some sign of improvement, the five-year-old is still tough to have in betting.
Master Of Wine
Master Of Wine is looking to improve on his first-up assignment where he made up decent ground for sixth in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes.
The Hawkes-trained six-year-old won the Group 3 Sky High Stakes over this track and trip last year and was far from disgraced when fourth in the Queen Elizabeth.
A win looks tough with two world class horses in the field, but don’t rule out a place with some strong form lines on wet tracks.
Angel Of Truth
Angel Of Truth strips fitter for his third run back from a spell when fifth to Homesman in the Group 1 Australia Cup at Flemington three weeks ago.
The Hawkes-trained five-year-old struggled to make up ground from a wide gate that day, making him better suited here after drawing much closer to the fence with Kerrin McEvoy back in the saddle.
It’s been close to two years since the son of Animal Kingdom took out the Group 1 ATC Derby at Randwick over further, but he does warrant consideration in the minors with plenty of wet track form on his resume.
Cliffs Of Moher
This is a significant step up in class for Cliffs Of Moher as the son of Adelaide faces Group 1 company for the first time.
The four-year-old did record an impressive win on a Heavy 8 two runs back at Newcastle, but it’s hard to imagine him beating home a field of this quality.
Verry Elleegant
Seven time Group 1 winner Verry Elleegant has raised the bar since she came off second best to Addeybb in both the Ranvet and the Queen Elizabeth this time last year.
Since then, Chris Waller’s superstar mare has added a further three Group 1’s to her resume by taking out both the Turnbull Stakes and the Caulfield Cup during the Spring, followed by a gutsy win over Colette more recently in the Chipping Norton Stakes.
Those performances alone suggest the daughter of Zed has only gotten stronger with running – a welcome sign after Addeybb wore her down in last year’s edition with 100m to spare.
After following an identical lead-in to last year’s race, she’s more than capable of staging some revenge where she’ll meet her rival 2kg better off.
Colette
Proven mudlark Colette gets conditions to suit on Saturday as she looks for revenge on Verry Elleegant.
The four-year-old by Hallowed Crown came off second-best to Chris Waller’s mighty mare two runs back in the Chipping Norton, before finding the ground a little too firm last time out over the same track and trip in the Sky High Stakes.
Hugh Bowman, who won this race 15 years ago aboard Desert War, has been booked to ride for the first time on Saturday.
Similar to the Chipping Norton, she maps to get a similar run just off the speed behind the likely leader Addeybb, and there is no question she is capable of finishing in the money on her preferred surface.
Miami Bound
Miami Bound gapped her rivals to win the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup during the spring, but hasn’t returned to work in the same order.
The mare by Reliable Man finished towards the rear of the field first-up in a Group 3 race at Caulfield and was nothing more than a footnote finishing dead last in the Australian Cup.
She does appreciate some sting out of the track, but she’ll only find this tougher in what is also her first look at Rosehill.
Nettoyer
Nettoyer is tough to recommend based on recent efforts.
The Sebring mare got away to a slow start first-up in the Aspiration Stakes a fortnight ago over the mile where she found herself too far back to strike.
Her efforts in both The Empire Rose Stakes and The Gong to close out the Spring were well below par, and while she has done some of her best racing with some sting out of the track, she’d she to produce something very special to beat home the top two in the market.
