Results: Sambro wins Queensland Guineas

Sydney three-year-old Sambro has put a recent barrier disaster behind him to give trainer Chris Waller his fourth feature race quinella of the winter carnival.

Sambro ($8.50) fought bravely to hold his stablemate Seaway ($4.80) by half a length in the Group Two Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Caloundra galloper Magnufighter ($51) ran the best race of his career to be third 1-1/4 lengths back.

Waller was quick to praise noted horse-breaker and former trainer Greg Bennett for Sambro’s win.

At Doomben two weeks ago, Sambro was scratched at the barriers after rearing up but there was no signs of that on Saturday as Sambro jumped with the field and was given a perfect ride by Michael Walker.

“Sambro’s a funny horse but Greg (Bennett) took him after his previous start barrier problems and has worked with him. He has obviously done a good job,” Waller said.

“Sambro won the Hawkesbury Guineas in April and he was an unlucky second in the Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington in the spring, so he deserved another stakes win.”

Waller said he was considering whether to run Sambro in the Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas in a fortnight.

Waller has already provided the quinella in the Group One Doomben Cup (Comin’ Through and Egg Tart), Group One Queensland Oaks (Youngstar and Another Dollar) and Group Two BRC Sires Produce(Lean Mean Machine and Zousain).

Waller also won the Group Two PJ O’Shea Stakes with Egg Tart at Caloundra last week.

Walker was distressed after the ride and was assisted to the jockeys room.
