Promising two-year-old Rothfire has turned his much-anticipated clash with first starter Wisdom Of Water into a one-act affair and earned himself a crack at stakes class.
Rothfire had won his first start but was sent out a $2.80 chance on the strength of heavy backing for Gold Coast colt Wisdom Of Water ($1.70) in the QTIS Two-Year-Old (1000m) at Eagle Farm.
But after clearing out from the rest of the field, Rothfire cruised past Water Of Wisdom in the straight and went on to win by six lengths to Married To The Mob ($14) with a short neck to Way Beyond ($13) in third place.
Wisdom Of Water stopped in the straight to finish fourth and jockey Robbie Fradd said the colt was immature..
Rothfire ran 57.13 for the 1000m which took almost a second off the class record.
Trainer Rob Heathcote has high hopes for Rothfire who was a “cheap buy” from the Gleeson Thoroughbreds operation.
“He might be something a bit special. He isn’t a Magic Millions horse but I might have crack at some of the summer two-year-old features up here,” Heathcote said.
Rothfire is in most Golden Slipper markets but Heathcote warned the gelding had not been nominated for the race.
Winning jockey Jim Byrne also has a big opinion of Rothfire and is keen to stick with him.
“It is rare to get on a two year old who is so calm,” Byrne said.
