The Robert Sangster Stakes is typically one of the more open Group 1 races post the Sydney and Melbourne Autumn Carnival each year, and we’ll be treated to another outstanding edition of the sprint for fillies and mares at Morphettville on Saturday.
There are form lines from all over the country and plenty of above-average gallopers engaged, and when 2021 Robert Sangster Stakes markets went up on Tuesday, we were faced with $7.50 the field.

Robert Sangster Stakes – Winner – No. 3 Subpoenaed
Subpoenaed has been freshened since her fair effort for seventh in the Coolmore Classic and I think she’ll take a power of beating in the Sangster.
The four-year-old daughter of Rip Van Winkle has been an outstanding horse for the outstanding Waller stable pretty much since making her debut, and he has recorded plenty of impressive wins in black type company during her nineteen trips to the races.
A Group 1 crown still eludes her, but her fresh form is excellent, I’m confident she is at her best over sprinting trips and she has drawn ideally into a field whereby a lot of her leading rivals have not.
Robert Sangster Stakes – 2nd – No. 6 Brooklyn Hustle
The Robert Sangster Stakes looks the perfect Group 1 target for Brooklyn Hustle and if she can overcome barrier 15, I think she’s a winning chance.
The Starspangledbanner mare has always hinted at above-average ability, and she resumed this time with an enormous performance to finish fourth, just over a head behind Celebrity Queen and Portland Sky in the Neds Oakleigh Plate.
She has only managed midfield placings in the Newmarket and the William Reid since, but this is a drop in class from those contests, she has been freshened and might not be offered a better opportunity to jag a Group 1 win.
Robert Sangster Stakes – 3rd – No. 1 Flit
Group 1 winner Flit is up to running a cheeky race in the Robert Sangster Stakes.
The Medaglia D’oro mare is winless in three starts back this time, but she has been competitive in some good races, finishing fifth in the Canterbury Stakes when fresh, and midfield in both the Newmarket Handicap and the William Reid.
She will have to overcome barrier 16 and plenty of good horses, but she’s clearly up to the class at her best and should receive a good steer under Damien Oliver.
Robert Sangster Stakes – 4th – No. 11 Rubisaki
She was pretty flat when fresh, but we all know how good Rubisaki is at her best and I’m happy to put her into my numbers on speculation.
The Rubick mare has been terrific throughout her career and was one of the standout performers of last autumn, winning each of her five starts during the preparation including some serious feature races.
She is another mare who is perhaps unlucky not to have already recorded a Group 1 win and she is drawn to receive a lovely run from barrier 4.
