Rosehill Guineas Tips, Race Preview and Selections – 19/3/2022

Five Group 1’s will be run and won this Saturday at Rosehill, including the Rosehill Guineas over 2000m.

A small field of three-year-olds have accepted for the $600,000 staying feature, and we are set for another fascinating duel between last-start Randwick Guineas winner Converge, and runner-up Anamoe.

The Rosehill Guineas race has always been a nice lead-up into the Australian Derby or the Doncaster Mile during The Championships later next month, and our thoughts on each runner can be found in our preview below.

1. Anamoe (9)

  • Group 1’s: 2 (2021 Sires’ Produce Stakes, Caulfield Guineas)
  • Record: 14-6:5:2
  • Track: 4:1-2-1
  • Distance: 1:0-1-0
  • Trainer: James Cummings
  • Jockey: James McDonald
  • Odds: $2.00

Steps out in search of his third Group 1 after being narrowly denied as the short-priced favourite in the Randwick Guineas last time out. Gets his rematch with Converge and should prove even harder to beat given he was beaten by a nose in last year’s Cox Plate over the trip. Comes into this hard fit now for three runs back and another wet track is a hug key to his chances. No horse has won the Rosehill Guineas from wider than barrier eight since 2007, but Anamoe is still the horse to beat.

2. Converge (8)

  • Group 1’s: 2 (2021 J.J. Atkins, 2022 Randwick Guineas)
  • Record: 11-4:2:3
  • Track: 3:0-1-1
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott
  • Jockey: Tim Clark
  • Odds: $3.60

Has drawn right alongside his rival Anamoe for a third tilt. Ran third in the Hobartville Stakes two back, but settled much closer in the Randwick Guineas and let down beautifully 300m from home to win by the narrowest of margins. Untried over 2000m but will be hard to hold out again if he produces that same turn of foot.

3. Prodondo (6)

  • Group 1’s: 1 (2021 Spring Champion Stakes)
  • Record: 4-2:1:0
  • Track: 1:0-1-0
  • Distance: 1:1-0-0
  • Trainer: Richard Litt
  • Jockey: Hugh Bowman
  • Odds: $5.50

Failed to live up to expectations when 13 of 15 in the Australian Guineas fresh. Was sensational during the spring though, rising through the grades quickly to cap his prep off with a two-length win in the Spring Champion Stakes. Certainly capable of much better and is worth forgiving on his first-up run after drawing wide. Does look a query racing on a heavy track for the first time but is still a smart young three-year-old in the making.

4. Forgot You (4)

  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Record: 11-3:0:2
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 1:1-0-0
  • Trainer: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young
  • Jockey: Mark Zahra
  • Odds: $9.00

Strips fitter for two runs back and was the winner of the Group 2 Stutt Stakes over the mile at The Valley third-up during the spring. Unplaced in three starts at Group 1 level, but does have form around Hitotsu after running fifth in the Victoria Derby last year, and fourth in the Australian Guineas a couple of weeks ago. Not sure the tempo suited him last time out and he’ll certainly appreciate getting out over further at this stage of his prep. Maps to settle midfield and should be making his presence felt late.

5. Raging Bull (5)

Had plenty against him second-up in the Randwick Guineas and was entitled to weaken badly down the straight. Still looks tested at this level but was far from disgraced over further in both the Spring Champion Stakes and the Victoria Derby during the spring.

6. Sword Point (7)

Facing Group 1 level for the first time. Stuck on well for fourth at Canterbury last time out on a Heavy 9 and was an impressive four-length winner over the track and distance before the freshen-up. Could be a sneaky knockout chance.

7. Sinba (1)

  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Record: 6-3:0:1
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou
  • Jockey: Jason Collett
  • Odds: $31.00

Won back-to-back starts at Newcastle and Kensington before coming undone in the Randwick Guineas up in grade. Doesn’t mind some sting out of the track but is untried out past the mile.

8. Three Wise Men (3)

  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Record: 8-1:1:1
  • Track: 1:0-0-1
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Edward Cummings
  • Jockey: Tom Sherry
  • Odds: $201

Strips fitter for two runs back but has struggled to show much in both runs at Canterbury and Newcastle. Will only find this tougher.

9. Mediaro (2)

  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Record: 3-1:1:0
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Matthew Smith
  • Jockey: Jay Ford
  • Odds: $61.00

Won his maiden two back at Canberra and had a fair bit go wrong on the heavy track at Newcastle two weeks ago. Facing a sharp rise in grade here is unlikely to trouble most of these.
