Small meal to celebrate Melbourne Cup win

After a week of wasting you might imagine a Melbourne Cup- winning jockey would enjoy a nice post-race meal.

But a shrunken stomach didn’t allow Corey Brown such extravagance after his second Melbourne Cup win on Tuesday.

His dinner consisted of a slider burger before the last of his press commitments after which he joined celebrations following Rekindling’s victory for Lloyd and Nick Williams and young Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien.

“I couldn’t put much in because my stomach had shrunk but I’ll stretch it today at lunch,” Brown said.

Brown had to lose three kilograms in the week leading up to the Melbourne Cup after being suspended ahead of the Cox Plate.

He rode In Her Time in the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on October 27.

“I was riding In Her Time work and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves that week and I reckon I got up to 56.5 kilos,” Brown said.

“By the time I really started to look after it I was down to 54.5 and I had a good three kilos to lose in the space of a week.

“It was a bit of an effort, not a huge effort because I’m fit, but I felt it the last half-a-kilo.

“But I’d do it all again and even get down to 50 kilos if I had to, especially if you think you’re going to ride a Melbourne Cup winner.

“It was good for Lloyd and Joseph O’Brien to trust me with the ride.”

Brown says he’s content to put his travelling days behind him and is settled in Sydney after returning from Singapore earlier in the year.

Although he said he wouldn’t mind trying his luck in Europe and team up with Joseph O’Brien if the opportunity arose.

“It was an absolute pleasure to put Lloyd’s colours on my back and be successful at this level and for Joseph being so young,” he said.

“He’s obviously from a good pedigree as far as training horses goes and to get on his Melbourne Cup winner was just great.”
