Snowdens on weather watch ahead of 2021 Takeover Target Stakes

Peter & Paul Snowden will decide on race morning whether pre-post favourite Signore Fox lines up in the Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford.

The track was rated a soft six on Thursday and Peter Snowden doesn’t want to see much more rain for the sprinter, who has posted seven of his nine wins on good ground.

“The big thing is tracks. We need to get good ground for him and it might be an issue on Saturday,” Snowden said.

“If we get to the heavy range he probably won’t be running. If it’s a (soft) five or six, he’ll be there, but if it’s an eight or nine, I wouldn’t think he’d be there.”

Signore Fox is a $2.70 favourite for the 1200m race and has arguably returned to work in career-best form.

Already a dual Listed winner, the five-year-old produced his customary resolute finish to claim the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes first-up before a solid fifth to Doomben 10,000-bound sprinter Splintex in the Hall Mark Stakes.

If he can get track conditions to suit, Snowden expects the small field of seven to suit the gelding, who will go back from a wide gate.

“The small field is a big thing. He will probably go back from his draw and we’ll ride him to finish off,” Snowden said.

Signore Fox is slated for a winter carnival campaign in Brisbane and holds nominations for the Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) on May 29 and the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) two weeks later.

Five of the seven runners in the Takeover Target are rated $11 and under with Easy Eddie a $3.30 second pick ahead of Enchanted Heart ($4.20) and last year’s winner Snitz ($7).
