Spirit Of Boom produces best win on 2013 Caulfield Cup day

Queensland galloper Spirit Of Boom finally cracked it for a Group level win in the Caulfield Sprint on Saturday.

Jubilant trainer Tony Gollan said sprinter had been threatening to win a Group race for a long time.

“We have been knocking our heads around down here for quite a few seasons and this is really rewarding and I’m just so stoked he won,” Gollan said.

“This looked a really good race for him in a good alley.”

Sent out a $10 chance in the Group Two race, Spirit of Boom produced his winning run in the centre of the track, beating Shamal Wind and Pago Rock into the placings.

Gollan praised jockey Nick Hall for giving Spirit Of Boom a perfect ride, settling the horse at the back of the field and then unleashing him at the corner.

Hall said there wasn’t a lot of speed on in the race but he felt that in the scramble to the line, his mount was going to be in the finish.

“He’s had a couple of hard runs and he had been overdoing it in a couple of races but today he drew the right gate to switch off and finish off strong,” Hall said.

Spirit Of Boom will continue his spring campaign in the Yellowglen Stakes at Flemington on November 2 where he will try to go one better than last year.

He will then go to Perth for the Winterbottom Stakes, a Group One race where he was beaten into third place in 2012.
