Black Caviar’s little sister Belle Couture is likely to command most attention at Flemington on Saturday but trainer David Hayes is hoping it is another well-related filly that steals the spotlight.

The Danny O’Brien-trained Belle Couture steps out for her third start in the Spotless Plate after an impressive first-up maiden win at Caulfield last month.

Her opposition in Saturday’s 1200m race includes the Hayes-trained Nicamorae who will be shooting for her third straight win.

Nicamorae, a half-sister to Group One winners Niconero and Nicconi, notched her first victory in a Wangaratta maiden first-up this campaign before adding a city win at Flemington on Anzac Day.

The filly, by More Than Ready out of Nicola Lass, sprinted clear in the 1000m restricted race down the Flemington straight to score by 2-1/4 lengths.

“If she can do that performance again I think we’ve got a smart filly on our hands,” Hayes said.

“She seems really well.”

Belle Couture, a Redoute’s Choice half-sister to unbeaten champion Black Caviar as well as four-time Group One winner All Too Hard, came from back in the field to race to a convincing 2-1/4 length first-up win over 1200m after a narrow second on debut at Bendigo in December.

Belle Couture and Nicamorae opened equal favourites at $4.60 on Wednesday.

“There is no doubt Belle Couture will be genuine opposition,” Hayes said.

“I was very impressed with her the other day.

“But we were as impressive, and nearly as well bred.”

Jake Noonan, who rode Nicamorae to victory at Flemington, retains the ride while James Winks has been called on to partner Belle Couture.

Damien Oliver has ridden Belle Couture in her two starts but will be in Adelaide for the Group One Goodwood race meeting.
