The final Group 1 race for three-year-olds in the Sydney Spring Carnival will be run and won at Royal Randwick on Saturday, and the Spring Champion Stakes has drawn a typically open field.
Many of the thirteen confirmed starters in the Spring Champion Stakes field have returned to the races in exceptional form this time and a potentially lucrative betting race has materialised.

Spring Champion Stakes – Winner
No. 1 Head Of State
I was very impressive with Head Of State’s performance and win in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes a couple of weeks ago, and he looks the runner to beat in this year’s Spring Champion Stakes.
The talented son of American Pharaoh has shown ability since making his debut, but it is fair to say that he has continued to improve with each effort, particularly this prep.
His run effort a fortnight ago was easily the best of his career so far.
James McDonald retains the ride, and he can deliver Coolmore a potentially enormous stud prospect by piloting this bloke into the Spring Champion Stakes winner’s stall.
Spring Champion Stakes – 2nd
Profondo has only made two appearances at the races so far, but he looks to be a serious racehorse, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the finish of the Spring Champion Stakes.
The Deep Impact colt stamped himself as a runner to follow with an impressive win on debut at Randwick-Kensington, and he kept his best work for late when second behind Head Of State in the Gloaming last time.
This is obviously another rise in class, but boasts plenty of upside and can fight out the finish again.
Spring Champion Stakes – 3rd
No. 4 Benaud
I consider Benaud to be a genuine winning chance in this year’s Victoria Derby, and he looks to be the value in Spring Champion Stakes betting at current odds ($11 at publish).
Benaud recorded a bullish win on debut at Nowra last month and was also the owner of an eye-catching run in the Gloaming Stakes, finishing third, albeit well beaten.
Breeding suggests that he’ll relish getting out to the 2000m and with even luck, I think that he can run into the places again.
Spring Champion Stakes – 4th
No. 12 Chill
Chill is rock-hard fit for her Spring Champion Stakes bid and she looks capable of another competitive performance
The Vancouver filly has already had five starts since resuming in August and has been competitive throughout her preparation.
She takes her place in this contest off the back of a credible fifth placing in the Group 1 Flight Stakes, and getting out to the 2000m looks ideal at this point of her prep.
