Spring Champion Stakes Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2023

Group 1 racing returns to Royal Randwick for Saturday’s Spring Champion Stakes!

It’s often one of the most open Group 1 races in Sydney each with, but with an honour roll including names like Savabeel, Dundeel and Montefilia, the Spring Champion Stakes has also been used as a launchpad for many three-year-olds into stardom.

You can find all of my thoughts and 2023 Spring Champion Stakes Tips below.

Suggested Bets

  • 4 Units straight out #2 Tom Kitten
  • Boxed Trifecta of the selections below

Spring Champion Stakes – Winner

There’s actually a pretty clear standout top pick engaged in this year’s Spring Champion Stakes field in my opinion, and it’s Tom Kitten.

Tom Kitten has proven to be a great horse for Godolphin since debuting, and he won the Fernhill Stakes most notably during his two-year-old season, when ending his prep fourth in Group 1 company.

Having returned this time to record a dominant win in the Up And Coming Stakes, the Harry Angel colt has since placing in each of the Ming Dynasty, the Dulcify and the Gloaming Stakes.

He’s in peak order for this race, and it really does look the perfect Group 1 target for him.

Suggested Bet: No. 2 Tom Kitten

Spring Champion Stakes – 2nd

Raf Attack takes winning form into the Spring Champion Stakes and can really increase his own value by winning.

The Satono Aladdin colt has continued to improve with each of three starts back from a break, culminating in a lovely win in the Gloaming Stakes last time out; the final stop on the traditional path towards this race.

He’s hard fit, he has been set for this race by trainers Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, and he can all but confirm a career at stud by winning it.

Suggested Bet: No. 1 Raf Attack

Spring Champion Stakes – 3d

Ganbare has already tasted success in the black type company this season, and he looks to be in peak order for the Spring Champion Stakes.

Having won a Class 1 at Hawkesbury in his first run back, he was all but forgotten in Dulcify Stakes betting second-up, but recorded an eye-catching win under a lovely steer from Timmy Clark.

Breeding suggests he’s going to love the 2000m, and I have little doubt that Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott will have him cherry ripe as well.

Suggested Bet: No. 3 Ganbare

Spring Champion Stakes – 4th

Port Lockroy has enjoyed a strong start to his racing career and will start a live chance in Spring Champion Stakes betting.

The Better Than Ready colt broke his maiden at Scone last month before running a credible fifth in the Dulcify Stakes over a mile.

Having won in BM72 company at the midweeks last time out, he does face a pretty steep rise in class, but a lot of his rivals are faced with similar prospects.

Suggested Bet: No. 6 Port Lockroy
