Surround Stakes Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

The Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) for the three year old fillies is sharing the limelight with the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes for the weight for age performers at Randwick on Saturday.

Group 1 winners Flit, Lyre, Kiamichi and Funstar are all well up in the betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Surround Stakes but are getting challenged by the promising Kiwi filly Probabeel who is the winner of her last two starts in New Zealand.

The three fillies Flit, Lyre and Kiamichi are set to clash again in the fourteen horse Surround Stakes field after finishing first, second and third in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 15.

We have analysed the entire field and our complete 2020 Surround Stakes tips can be found below!

Flit

Thousand Guineas winner Flit returned for the Autumn in great style with a comprehensive first up win in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 15. The James Cummings trained filly will be even better suited over the 1400m of the Surround and will be hard to beat again.

Lyre

Lyre was the star two year old of the 2019 Melbourne Autumn Carnival with her win in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield but she failed to find the winner’s stall during the 2019 Spring Carnival. The Anthony Freedman trained filly looks to be getting back to her best with a first-up second in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes at Randwick on February 15 and look for her to figure amongst the prizemoney again.

Kiamichi

2019 Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi failed to perform in the Spring with two unplaced runs but was able to hold on for third after leading in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 15 when resuming. Kiamichi is yet to win beyond 1200m with all her three victories being over that distance. She is likely to set the pace again.

Funstar

Funstar is the winner of four of her five race starts and was the star three year old filly of the 2019 Sydney Spring Carnival with an all the way win in the Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m at Randwick.  The Chris Waller trained filly is resuming and has two wins from two first up runs but will need more than her share of luck after drawing the outsider barrier in the fourteen horse field. Has to be included among the chances.

Probabeel

Kiwi filly Probabeel wasn’t far off the mark during the 2019 Sydney Spring Carnival with a second to Funstar in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick and has won her last two starts in New Zealand in January. The Jamie Richards trained filly has returned to Sydney in great order and can’t be underestimated.

Missile Mantra

Missile Mantra was beaten a nose by Flit in the 2019 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield during the Melbourne Spring Carnival but was always near the tail of the field when resuming for a tenth in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 15. Has the blinkers going back on and expect improvement stepping up to the 1400m of the Surround Stakes.

How Womantic

The Victorian filly How Womantic is undefeated from four race starts but is facing her toughest test stepping up to Group 1 class following her win in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 8. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained How Womantic has the blinkers going on in the Surround Stakes and look for further improvement.

Xilong

Xilong was spelled after winning the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) at Sandown at the end of the 2019 Melbourne Spring Carnival and is facing a tough task first up in the Group 1 Surround Stakes.

Akari

Akari was a to times Listed winner during the 2019 Spring Carnival at Randwick and Flemington but never threatened when a first up seventh in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 15 and will find this tougher.

Betcha Flying

Betcha Flying was placed twice at Listed level during the 2019 Spring Carnival but is facing much tougher opposition in the Group 1 Surround Stakes.

Heart Of The Oak

Heart Of The Oak is the winner of three of her four race starts in restricted class and is way out her depth against the Group 1 fillies in the Surround Stakes.

Emeralds

Emeralds made up a little bit of ground when fifth in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 15 but harder here.

Saas Fee

Saas Fee ran a handy third in the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Gosford on December 27 but facing a huge step up in class here.

Aspect Ratio

Aspect Ratio is still eligible for restricted class and has been installed as the outsider of the Surround Stakes field at Ladbrokes.com.au.
