The Surround Stakes is a set weights race for three year old fillies run over 1400m and is one of two Group 1 races taking place at Royal Randwick this Saturday afternoon.
The race has been won by some quality fillies over the years including Gold Edition (2007), More Joyous (2010) and Probabeel (2020).
We have run through every runner that has accepted for the race and our full 2022 Surround Stakes Preview can be read below.
Yearning
The Group 1 Thousand Guineas winner resumes over 1400m in the Surround Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
The daughter of Snitzel is out of the proven mare Rising Romance and she has had two solid trials leading into this first up assignment.
There is no doubt that she will improve on whatever she produces in this race with bigger goals in mind out in distance later in the autumn but her class will take her a long way.
Never Been Kissed
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly Never Been Kissed has produced three wins from just the five career race starts.
She finished second behind the very smart Profondo in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at this track to round out her spring campaign and while this is short of her best, she is a major player with two trials under the belt.
Fangirl
Fangirl was first over the line for the fourth time in her short six race career when she resumed in the Group 2 Light Fingers over 1200m two weeks ago.
Although it was a blanket finish in that race, she showed an enormous turn of foot and she beat home the hype horse Espiona in that event which is hard to ignore.
She’ll take plenty of benefit out of that run and the step up in distance suits.
Barrier 16 does not.
Four Moves Ahead
There is no doubting the ability of Four Moves Ahead who has performed well at this level in the past.
While there was cause for concern that she has not come up after her spell after finishing 7.5 lengths behind the winner Fangirl in the Group 2 Light Fingers first up, she is too good a filly to give up on just yet.
Nash Rawiller will need to be at his best from barrier 18.
Hinged
The Chris Waller trained Hinged is another that comes through the Light Fingers and she was doing her best late in the concluding stages of the race to finish seventh.
She put together three wins in a row during her last campaign before being narrowly denied in the Group 1 Flight Stakes at this track.
A repeat of that effort would see her go close in this contest.
Jamaea
It’s hard to get that Group 2 Furious Stakes win out of my head when she stormed over the top of a very good field from last to win during the spring.
When resuming in the Light Fingers, she looked like the winner at one stage and she will only benefit from that run.
She has always looked like a filly that will improve as she gets older and she possesses a turn of foot that may be unrivaled in her age and sex group.
Espiona
Despite losing as the short priced favourite in the Light Fingers, I doubt this filly lost too many admirers.
Her win on Oaks Day during the Melbourne Cup carnival was simply out of this world when scoring by 6.5 lengths and that was the win of a very promising young race horse.
She is not a 1200m horse and was really only getting worked up late in the race and she showed good fight when challenged.
Make no mistake that she is the horse to beat despite it clearly being her biggest challenge to date.
Startantes
Rob Heathcote has sent his star filly down to Sydney for an autumn campaign and she was very competitive in the Light Fingers at her second start this prep.
She brings in a fitness edge over a few of these fillies and while she will need to continue to improve, she is a knock out hope.
Zouzarella
The Listed Atlantic Jewel winner Zouzarella was another that resumed in the Light Fingers.
The race was there to be won at the 250m mark and she had every chance but there were a few that had her measure.
This race will be no different in my opinion.
Heresay
It would be very east to just copy and paste what was said above for Zouzarella for this filly as well.
I just think she is better suited at a level of two below this and will again need to find a few level to compete in this race.
She is a truly gorgeous filly to look at though.
Shihonka
Shihonka has three wins from six starts this prep and she was last seen finishing sixth in the Magic Millions Guineas on the Gold Coast.
She has had a trial between runs leading into this event and she brings different formlines, as well as residual fitness into this Group 1 event.
Sweet Ruby
The Kim Waugh trained Sweet Ruby is a progressive type of filly who has now put together two wins on the trot albeit in much inferior grade.
Would need to continue to improve dramatically to be a chance.
Tilianam
The third filly from the Waterhouse and Bott team is Tilianam who is having just her fifth career start.
She’d need to improve on her last couple of efforts to be any chance.
Larkspur Run
The James Cummings trained Larkspur Run comes through the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes at Caulfield where he was beaten just 2.6 lengths first up.
Barrier 15 is of some concern but on exposed form, he can run a cheeky race with luck.
Ringarosa
Ringarosa broke through for an impressive 2.5 length win at Kembla Grange before she was well beaten in a benchmark 64 last start.
Not for me.
Hope In Your Heart
Beaten in two benchmark 72 races so far this prep.
Not up to this level of racing at this stage in her career.
Von Trapp
Von Trapp is the first emergency.
I’m Divine
I’m Devine is the second emergency.
