Temper Tantrum wins Strutt Stakes

Mornington based trainer Alex Macpherson landed his biggest win in 15 years in the game when Temper Tantrum won the Listed $100,000 Strutt Stakes at Hobart on Sunday.

Macpherson ferried the chestnut daughter of Hold That Tiger to Tasmania on Wednesday night with the intention of staying on for the Listed $100,000 Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) under lights at Launceston on February 22, if she ran well in the Strutt.

The filly, ridden by Melbourne jockey Rhys McLeod, completed a hat-trick of wins in the 2100m event.

Temper Tantrum sat off race favourite and leader Gee Gee’s La Quinta but outstayed that filly and went on for a 1-1/4 length win over Khandallah with Gee Gee’s La Quinta the same margin away third.

“We bred her and own her and she’s a stakes winning filly now so it’s a great result,” Macherson said after winning his first black type race.

Temper Tantrum has raced seven times but showed little over sprint trips.

She broke through at $51 when stepped up to 1600 metres in a Cranbourne fillies and mares maiden (1600m) on January 22 and made it two straight in a 0-62 handicap (1600m) on Werribee Cup Day a week later.

The filly is being stabled with trainer John Keys at Wesley Vale, near Devonport, and will return to Victoria after the Oaks.

McLeod, said he didn’t ride much in Tasmania but would be returning to ride Temper Tantrum in the Oaks.
