The Inevitable makes racing return at Caulfield

Sidelined through injury, Tasmanian galloper The Inevitable makes his return on the mainland.

The former pin-up boy of Tasmanian racing makes his return from injury in a sprint race at Caulfield.

The Scott Brunton-trained The Inevitable runs in the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (1100m) on Saturday after an injury enforced break.

A rising six-year-old, The Inevitable was a star three-year-old winning five of his first six starts, including the Group 2 C S Hayes Stakes at Flemington before finishing eighth to fellow Tasmanian Mystic Journey in the Group 1 Australian Guineas.

Returning the following spring, The Inevitable won again at Fleminton and The Valley before taking out The Silver Eagle at Rosehill, enroute to finishing 12th to Kolding in The Golden Eagle.

Last year’s COVID lockdown prevented travel between states and The Inevitable was transferred to Patrick Payne for a two-run campaign while last spring, back in Brunton’s cares, The Inevitable ran three times, without troubling the scorer.

Brunton said the gelding needed time to get over his problems.

“He had a bit of rehab time at the beach. He’s had a couple of trials and a few grass gallops back and he’s ready to go,” Brunton told RSN.

“He may be a little over-trained for the 1100 (metres) but I expect him to be hitting the line hard.”

Brunton said it was hard to get a line on how The Inevitable was tracking towards his return as he is not the greatest trackworker.

“My partner Tegan (Keys), she rides him work and couldn’t be happier with him and he seems like the same old horse,” Brunton said.

“Let’s hope that’s the case, because if he is, it is probably one of the weaker races he has contested for a very long time.

“We’re under no illusions when these horses have had injuries and they’re on the way back, it’s not often it’s a great story, but I’m hoping this one can be.”
