Trainers Toby and Trent Edmonds are looking to keep the ‘picket fence’ run of The Vowels going in the Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm.

The Vowels will be aiming for his sixth straight win when he contests the Group 2 1600m race for three-year-olds on Saturday, his toughest test to date.

Commencing his winning streak at the Sunshine Coast on New Year’s Day, The Vowels went on to win at Ipswich, the Sunshine Coast again ahead of Eagle Farm before a freshen up.

The Vowels returned to claim the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on April 15 which prompted the trainers to aim higher.

“Five in a row is exciting,” Toby Edmonds said.

“I don’t think we have ever done that before with a horse, had five in a row.

“He keeps lifting the bar each time, he’s been carrying big weights, but he’s got set weights this week which makes it interesting.

“It’s a tougher race naturally, but he’s a very bold, nice horse, that keeps on performing each time we send him out.”

Edmonds said after The Vowels had been successful at Eagle Farm on February 18, he was sent for a freshen up to have him ready to compete during the Queensland Winter Carnival.

He said a trial at Beaudesert four days before his first-up win had the gelding in nice order ahead of his first-up win in the Daybreak Lover Stakes four days later.

“We freshened him up for two-and-a-half weeks between wins and then prepared him up to win first-up,” Edmonds said.

“We then wanted to have him peak second-up, which has been my goal.

“I think we’ve got him there.”
