Glen Thompson has walked a diverse path through the racing industry, gaining experience across multiple roles before recently stepping into the spotlight.
He’s spent time as assistant trainer to Michael Freedman in Singapore and his brother John Thompson, and even ran his own operation in Queensland during the 2010s.
Most recently, he worked alongside Mike Moroney, eventually entering a training partnership with him at the start of the season. Following Moroney’s passing in February, Thompson assumed full control.
His most significant win to date came courtesy of Bankers Choice in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) on April 19, and now he has his sights set even higher with Benagil contesting the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville.
Currently rated a $4 favourite, Benagil is well placed to deliver Thompson his first elite-level success.
The filly has had nine career starts and impressed early with back-to-back wins before tackling the top-tier fillies in spring.
This autumn, she has stepped up again, winning over a mile at Caulfield before finishing runner-up to Treasurethe Moment in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on April 1.
Although the ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) was considered, Thompson believed the Adelaide option was more suitable.
“That’s one of the main reasons we dodged Sydney and looked at (hopefully) this easier option and it’s her chance to win a Group 1,” Thompson said.
“And watching the race the other day, I think we’ve made the right call.”
Benagil returned to Melbourne before her Adelaide assignment and has responded well to a short freshen-up and a jump-out.
“You wouldn’t know she had had the trip away to Sydney,” Thompson said.
“It will be a month between runs, so she had a jump-out last week to get her ready.
“She’s straightforward to train. She’s got a great attitude, and I wish they were all like her.”
