The sixth race at Caulfield racecourse on Saturday is the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude. The race is to be run over 1400m with the current favourite being Commanding Jewel who will be looking to continue her unbeaten record although she has been a notable drifter in the market with support coming for numerous other runners. 1. LADY OF HARRODS
Led and dictated in the McNeil Stakes here at Caulfield three weeks back and from her inside draw expect her to prominent again however, doubt with the big field she’ll get as easy time of it as she did last start.
2. REAL STOLLE
Patinack Farm representative who has only recorded the one win from seven career starts, that being the G3 Maribyrnong Plate at her second start. Hasn’t placed in five runs since and from her wide draw, will be up against it.
3. MEMBERS JOY
Didn’t handle the heavy conditions when first up tailed off in the Listed Quezette but bounced right back on the better surface with a strong win at Flemington a fortnight ago in the Listed Cat D’Antibes. Had a lovely run on that occasion, might find things a little tricker from the wide draw.
4. AFFABLE
Second of Patinack’s who has won two from six. From the wide draw got back first up last start and finished mid-field behind Members Joy. Draw hasn’t been kind again here and will have plenty in front of her turning for home.
5. MOLTO BENE
Won a Gawler Maiden on debut and then backed that up with an impressive 3 length win in the Group 3 SA Sire’s Produce. Returned to racing in the Cap D’Antibes and didn’t have a great deal of room and should’ve finished closer. Another who has draw wide but has ability and could be motoring late.
6. BLOOMINGDALE MISS
Has won two from four starts, both here at Caulfield but in lesser company than what she faces up to here today. Will get her chance from her inside draw and appreciates any sting out of the ground.
7. DONNA CATTIVA
Won the Listed Oakland Plate in Adelaide last prep and followed that up with a second to Affable in the Listed Carmichael before rounding at the campaign behind Sizzling in the G1 TJ Smith – all events over a mile. Well held first up over 1100m. The step up suits but still might find them a bit too slick.
8. COMMANDING JEWEL
Reigning favourite for the 1000 Guineas @ $4.80 off the back of her two wins thus far where she has sat up on the pace and let down well. Be interesting to see what she does from this draw and bigger field.
9. PROPER MADAM
Stratum filly who made up a lot of ground at Flemington a fortnight ago behind Members Joy. Deserves her shot off the back of that effort and should be able to reproduce something similar, might be a sneaky place chance.
10. DAZZLER
Darley runner who won both starts earlier this year (a Geelong Maiden and Flemington Open) but didn’t offer a great deal when returning to racing in the Cat D’Antibes, despite jumping from the widest gate. Couldn’t include her on that effort.
11. LONHRUGE
Won her most recent start, a Restricted 68 event in the Heavy at Sandown a little over a month ago now. Expect to see her use her inside gate and take up a good spot but hard to see her holding some of the late challenges.
12. SHOWMYA MISS
Impressive, albeit in a Geelong Synthetic Maiden, when winning on debut and back that up with a fourth to Commanding Jewel four weeks back after suffering interference at the start. 7/1 bet about her that day, can get $12 in early markets and is one for the multiples.
13. SPITFIRE LADY
Well bred filly, half to Pinnacles and Sabrage by Hussonet. Debuted in May and immediately spelled and returned for a soft kill in a Seymour Maiden, winning by 2 ¼ . From astute yard and not to be underestimated.
14. Marlais
Has had only the one start, finishing second of eight in a Bendigo Restricted 68 effort. Appears to be aiming too high.
15. YOUNG GIRL
Another who has only the one start to her name. She debuted in the Listed Cat D’Antibes as an 80/1 chance and made up a few positions from midfield in the run home but not quite enough to include here.
OVERVIEW
A big field with a number of these fillies with limited experience and form, I’m not too sure if I want to be rushing in to Commanding Jewel at the $2.80 on offer. Not saying she can’t win but I’d be more inclined to take a couple at around double figure odds that could jump out of the ground – which can often happen in these early 3yo races. Molto Bene ($9.00) should’ve finished closer last start and despite the wide draw, is capable of running a big race, as is Showmya Miss ($12.00) from the Mick Price camp. Price and Newitt are a formidable combination and not to be underestimated here.
