We’re set for an open edition of the Thousand Guineas in its new position, five weeks later than its previous date!
The Thousand Guineas winners list boasts some real stars of the Australasian turf, but the complexion of the three-year-old fillies’ Melbourne Spring Carnival has completely changed, and it has breathed new life into this race as a featured target.

Thousand Guineas – Winner
Skybird puts an unbeaten record on the line in the Thousand Guineas, and I am confident that she can keep it alive.
The Exosphere filly stamped herself as one to watch by breaking her maiden easily on debut at Ballarat, and she has continued to improve with each start and as the bar has been raised, culminating in her winning the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic at her latest.
She will clearly relish the trip, Beau Mertens understandably retains the ride, and I think that she will deliver up-and-coming trainer Mitchell Freedman a second Group 1 victory for the season, this weekend.

Thousand Guineas – 2nd
Kimochi has only recorded one win in her career to date, but she’s also yet to miss the placings, and I can’t find any reason why she won’t return her usual competitive performance in the Thousand Guineas.
The Brave Smash filly placed in each of her first three starts back this time, all in Group 2 company, before finishing second in the Group 1 Flight Stakes.
She was freshened, and returned to fill the minors in the Desirable Stakes at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, and I am confident that run will have brought her right back on.

Thousand Guineas – 3rd
Coeur Volante hasn’t tasted anything but success this time in, and the Thousand Guineas has always been her major target.
The Proisir filly went for a break after breaking her maiden at Sandown back in June, and she returned to win the Group 3 Champagne Stakes at The Valley in September.
Having backed up that effort with another lovely win in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude last time out, she clearly races well with her runs spaced, and she’s drawn to receive every chance on Saturday under Blake Shinn.
Suggested Bet: No. 2 Coeur Volante
Thousand Guineas – 4th
Joliestar has been a model of consistency since debuting and looks a winning chance in the Thousand Guineas under James McDonald.
The Zoustar filly broke her maiden on debut at Warwick Farm and was immediately put away, and she has finished second in each of three starts back this time, including both the Reginald Allen and the Desirable Stakes.
She’s hard fit, has options in running from the rails draw, and another win for champion trainer Chris Waller certainly wouldn’t surprise.
