The curtain will draw to a close shortly on the career of Tofane but there is still some unfinished business to do.
It was announced on Friday that Tofane would be sold at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast in May, but first the Mike Moroney-trained galloper will run in the $5m All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.
Tofane is a four-time Group 1 winner but is yet to win at 1600m and in three starts at the trip, all at Group 1 level, she has a best finish of a second in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield last spring.
The daughter of Ocean Park resumed from a break to claim the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 12 before a last start third to Sierra Sue, beaten two lengths, in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 26.
Mark Zahra had the ride on both occasions, but with his Blue Diamond winning ride Daumier heading to Sydney for the Group 1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill on Saturday, Jamie Mott will take over on Tofane.
Moroney said a track that favoured horses near the fence was detrimental to Tofane’s chances last time out as was the two weeks between runs.
“We were disappointed with the way the track played and we were a bit of a victim having to come out four wide in the worst ground,” Moroney said.
“She had to scout and make her run a little early with a horse stopping in front of her and she ended up having the toughest run in the worst ground.”
The run took its toll on Tofane with Moroney reporting it took a couple of days to get over the run.
“She’s fine now. She kept eating but was a bit lethargic by her standards,” Moroney said.
“She had two hard runs a fortnight between and she was a little bit tired, so the three weeks between runs will suit her a bit better.”
Tofane is a $15 chance in latest betting with TAB ahead of the barrier draw on Tuesday.
