Trainer Toby Edmonds to sizzle in JJ Atkins Stakes

Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds can put the icing on his best season to date if Sizzling Ace can win the Group One J J Atkins Stakes at Doomben.

He recently brought up 50 metropolitan winners for the season and is a clear second to Tony Gollan on the Brisbane premiership.

Edmonds is poised to break 100 winners on all tracks this season and is also looking for a first Group One win on Saturday.

Sizzling Ace will be attempting to become only the third maiden to win the Atkins (1600m) for two-year-olds after Freemason in 1999 and Linky Dink in 2009.

But Edmonds thinks there is a strong case for her.

“She dead -for third in the (BRC) Sires and I think most agree she should have run at least second because she didn’t have much luck at the top of the straight,” he said.

“We have been waiting to get her out to 1600 metres and she has drawn the rails so she should race close like she did in the Sires.”

Sizzling Ace is by first season sire Sizzling who won the Atkins in 2012.

Sydney jockey Glyn Schofield has retained the ride and believes the 1600m will suit Sizzling Ace.

Meanwhile, Edmonds has kept his smart sprinters Tyzone and Plucky Girl for Ipswich Cup day on Saturday week.

“At this stage Tyzone will run in the (Listed) Eye Liner Stakes and Plucky Girl in the (Listed) Gai Waterhouse Classic,” he said.

Granny Red Shoes who picked up black-type for her win in the Oxlade Stakes at Caloundra last is likely to be kept for the Listed Mercedes Benz Stakes on June 23.
