John McArdle may not have vivid memories of the 2012 Debutant Stakes, but its winner, Villa Verde, now plays a crucial role in his career.
The Mornington-based trainer initially accepted two horses, Zapata Falls and Tens All Round, for the Listed race but ultimately didn’t run either. That race was won by Villa Verde, who defeated future Golden Slipper champion Overreach, making McArdle’s withdrawals seem like a blessing in disguise.
“I don’t really remember it,” McArdle admitted. “Tens All Round won on debut at Sale before injury, and Zapata Falls put together a streak before heading north.”
Fast forward to this Saturday at Caulfield, McArdle now trains Villa Verde’s daughter, My Gladiola, in pursuit of Blue Diamond Stakes glory.
My Gladiola, sired by I Am Invincible, shot into contention after an impressive debut win in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m), mirroring her mother’s success.
Villa Verde, a $95,000 Inglis Premier purchase, made her mark with wins in the Ottawa Stakes and Challenge Stakes before being sold as a broodmare for $1.1 million.
Despite producing several foals, My Gladiola appears to be the most promising yet. Her siblings, including Daksha, Shivani, Invencible, and Blue Special, have had mixed racing careers, while My Gladiola’s natural ability stands out.
“I’ve seen them all, and she’s the most forward,” McArdle said. “She’s a big, powerful filly who caught our eye immediately.”
Villa Verde hails from a strong lineage, tracing back to Rory’s Jester, a 1985 Golden Slipper winner and prolific sire. McArdle, having worked with Rory’s Jester progeny in his early career, hopes this bloodline and I Am Invincible’s influence will make My Gladiola a long-term racing force.
“The ‘Vinnies’ improve with age, but she already looks the part,” McArdle said. “She’s worth more now than what we paid for her.”
My Gladiola will jump from barrier 11 with Jamie Mott aboard. After leading and being caught late in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m), McArdle is confident she’ll perform better with a more reserved run.
“If we can get a tow into the race, she’s got an electric turn of foot when held up,” he said. “Hopefully, everything falls into place on Saturday.”
