Weetwood Day is the biggest program of racing in Toowoomba every year, and it takes centre stage in Queensland on Saturday!
The return of the highly talented Yellow Brick headlines the feature race, but there are nine winners to be found in total, and I’m confident in having unearthed a few below in my 2023 Weetwood Day Tips.
Barrier Reef Pools Class 3 Plate (1000m) – 1:08pm
Devasting has been a model of consistency this time in and boasts a key fitness edge over his leading rivals.
The Tony Gollan-trained gelding hasn’t missed a placing in three runs back, winning over 1000m at Eagle Farm two back before filling the minors at his latest.
With even luck and under James Orman, I’m confident that he can win again.
Suggested Bet: No. 1 Devastating
Toowoomba Truck Spares Pat O’Shea Plate (1000m) – 1:43pm
This is a wide-open race, and every galloper is on debut.
There is simply too much that can happen in this race from a betting perspective, so I am happy to stay out of it.
Suggested Bet: No Bet
Eureka Stud Fillies & Mares BM75 Handicap (1200m) – 2:18pm
The consistent Outlawed strikes another very winnable race up at Toowoomba on Weetwood Day.
Outlawed hasn’t finished worse than second in four starts back this time, recording two dominant wins in town most notably, and only just missing at her latest.
She’s hard-fit and I really can’t find a reason why she won’t be in the finish.
Suggested Bet: No. 12 Outlawed
AG Rigging Class 6 Plate (1300m) – 2:53pm
Arnaqueur returned a winner at Doomben last month and can go on with the job at Toowoomba on Saturday.
The Astern gelding races consistently for Jean Dubois down in New South Wales last time in, but his move north and transfer to the care of O’Dea and Hoysted this time paid immediate dividends.
Something like this does look the next logical step for him to take.
Suggested Bet: No. 6 Arnaqueur
K&R Plumbing Supplies BM80 Handicap (1625m) – 3:32pm
Kronenbourg looks to be a pretty clear standout top pick in this race, in my opinion.
The five-year-old son of Vadamos recorded three-consecutive races wins in town through winter, and he returned from a freshen-up to finish second behind Preach at Doomben a fortnight ago.
With added improvement for that hit-out, this looks an ideal race, and he is my best bet on the program.
Suggested Bet: No. 4 Kronenbourg
Magic Millions Garden City Guineas (1625m) – 4:12pm
This is another wide-open race with plenty of winning chances, and I’m going to have an each way play on Planned Encounter.
Planned Encounter stamped herself as one to watch by winning on debut at Doomben last month, and she hasn’t been disgraced in two runs since.
She should have finished closer to the winner in BM70 company at Eagle Farm last time out after being held up at a pivotal moment of the race, and she gets the opportunity to atone on Saturday.
Suggested Bet: No. 6 Planned Encounter
Toowoomba Cup (2000m) – 4:48pm
Wide-open edition of the Toowoomba Cup, but I thought it looked a perfect feature for Namazu.
Namazu has been racing in competitive form since transferring to Rockhampton-based trainer Ricky Vale back in July, winning two of four, including the Townsville Cup, while only just missing on another occasion.
Regular rider Ryan Wiggins is booked and so long as the horse handles topweight, I really can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish again.
Suggested Bet: No. 1 Namazu
Listed Weetwood Handicap (1200m) – 5:30pm
Yellow Brick will launch his spring campaign in the Weetwood, and he’s going to take a power of beating.
The four-year-old son of The Mission has been one of Queensland’s most exciting prospects since making his debut in my opinion, and he is yet to miss placing in ten career starts.
He’s picked off some nice races like the Gold Coat Guineas, he’s finished second in others like the Magic Millions Guineas, Fred Best Classic and Gunsynd Classic, and he can use this as a springboard into something bigger and betting.
Suggested Bet: No. 2 Yellow Brick
Moore Trailers C,G& E BM75 Handicap (1200m) – 6:15pm
I’m going to give Pocket Full another chance when he takes his place in the last on Weetwood Day.
Having won each of his first two back from a break, the Rich Enuff gelding has continued to turn in competitive efforts during a busy prep, and we were with him when he ran second in BM70 company last time out.
He’s in peak order and Ben Thompson should be able to give him every chance from barrier 7.
Suggested Bet: No. 11 Pocket Full
