Group 1 racing continues at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse on Saturday when a capacity field steps out in the Winterbottom Stakes!
The Winterbottom Stakes has been a particularly good one for interstate raiders throughout the last decade, with seven of the last ten editions claimed by horses from outside of Western Australia.

Winterbottom Stakes – Winner
I’m confident that Overpass can continue the trend of interstate Winterbottom Stakes winners this weekend.
The Bjorn Baker-trained sprinter has always been a competitive type, but he truly began to realise his top line potential in the autumn of this year, when first winning the lucrative The Quokka here at Ascot, before finishing less than half a length behind Giga Kick in the Doomben 10,000.
He had two starts during the Sydney Spring Carnival, finishing second in The Shorts most notably, while he really wasn’t disgraced in The Everest.
This is a big drop in class, a recent trial adds further confidence, and he is obviously proven at the route.
Suggested Bet: No. 1 Overpass
Winterbottom Stakes – 2nd
I think that the market just about has this right, and current second-elect Triple Missile can fight out the finish as well.
The Lindsay Smith-trained gelding has won seven of his eighteen career starts to date, placing a further five times and finding form around some very handy opposition.
He does seem to have taken a step up in class this time in, running second behind talented straight-tracker Star Patrol in the Gilgai Stakes most notably, while he was only a length behind a very smart Spacewalk in the Rising Fast Stakes on Derby Day.
Damien Oliver has options from the rails draw, and the horse does look up to winning something of this quality.

Winterbottom Stakes – 3rd
He has drawn horrifically in the outside barrier, but Snowdome was an eye-catching winner first-up from a break and is open to plenty of improvement.
The Rommel entire has been a consistent performer for Neville Parnham since debuting, winning seven of seventeen starts, and arguably returning his best performance to date in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes first-up this time.
His second-up record is excellent, Neville Parnham’s horses are absolutely flying, and I thought that the $11 about Snowdome in 2023 Winterbottom Stakes betting (at publish) was a touch of overs.
Suggested Bet: No. 7 Snowdome
Winterbottom Stakes – 4th
Of those horses firmly in the 2023 Winterbottom Stakes betting market, Ripcord was probably the biggest winner of the barrier draw and will leave from gate 7.
The three-year-old son of Written By has well and truly stamped himself as one to watch during his six career starts to date, missing the placings only once, and stamping his claims on this race by winning the Placid Ark a fortnight ago.
He’s hard fit and this is a big rise in class, but he’s weighted well, and he does look to have the required ability to be in the finish.
