Ford’s Jack Le Brocq has broken through for his maiden Supercars win after an unpredictable final race of the Sydney Supersprint.
The Tickford Racing underdog produced the drive of his life at Sydney Motorsport Park on Sunday to win a race for the first time, having started life as a full-time driver in 2018.
After qualifying seventh-fastest, the 28-year-old edged out Kelly Racing’s Andre Heimgartner, who started the race from pole.
Holden’s Todd Hazelwood completed an unlikely top-three after eclipsing’s Penrite Racing’s David Reynolds in a thrilling finish.
Reynolds (fourth) and Scott Pye rounded out the top-five for Holden after Ford went 1-2.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, I don’t really know what to feel,” Le Brocq said.
“The last five laps I was in trouble so I was just hanging on and I got there somehow.”
Two-time defending champion Scott McLaughlin endured a horror end to the weekend, slumping to 14th.
The Ford flyer – who won Saturday night’s opening race of the round under the new permanent lights at the Eastern Creek venue – had been expected to equal the legendary Peter Brock’s career tally of 48 race wins.
That triumph was McLaughlin’s 47th career race victory and edged him within one win of the late Brock’s mark.
Earlier in Sunday’s first 32-lap race, Holden’s Nick Percat secured another win at Sydney Motorsport Park, backing up his triumph at the same circuit three weeks ago.
In less than a month, Percat has doubled his Supercars career win tally from the previous nine years.
Before his third career victory last month, Percat’s previous Supercars race win came at the 2016 Adelaide 500.
Percat won the Bathurst 1000 on debut in 2011 and began his full-time driving career in 2014.
He put together a smart race on Sunday, picking off McLaughlin and Red Bull Holden ace Shane van Gisbergen, as the pair started from the front of the grid.
