A Holden clean sweep of the Supercars Eseries fourth round has not stopped Ford’s Cameron Waters claiming overall honours on Wednesday night.
Waters failed to secure a round four victory in the simulated racing series after Holden won all four races on offer.
However, Waters collected enough points to earn driver of the round honours with finishes of second, 10th and two fifth placings in races held on Canada’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and Watkins Glen International Raceway, New York.
Two-time Supercars series defending champion Scott McLaughlin still leads the 10-round Eseries standings, 80 points ahead of Waters.
Holden’s Shane van Gisbergen is third overall after starting round four with victory – his fourth win in six races on the Supercars virtual circuit.
The 29-strong field featured the return of two-time Supercars champion Marcos Ambrose and fellow wildcards, IndyCar star Alexander Rossi and NASCAR gun Joey Logano.
Ambrose raced in a Pirtek-sponsored Ford Mustang, similar to the Tasmanian’s championship-winning Falcons from 2003 and 2004 before he went on to have a successful 10-year racing career in the United States.
He finished 21st and 17th in the first two races on the Montreal track before action switched to Watkins Glen where Ambrose secured both wins of his NASCAR career.
He fared better at his preferred track, finishing 14th and sixth before hinting that he may return to the Eseries.
“This is just like the real thing, it is quite incredible, and it’s great to see all the drivers supporting it,” Ambrose, who last raced in Supercars in 2015, told Fox Sports.
“The stigma of online racing has gone away now. I believe online racing is here to stay.”
Best performing wildcard was ex-Indianapolis 500 champion Rossi who finished second in the final 14-lap race at Watkins Glen following placings of 15th, last and 16th respectively.
Former NASCAR champion Logano struggled, causing race two carnage after being slow off the starting grid and managing modest finishes of second-last, 22nd, 23rd and 21st.
In race one, van Gisbergen won ahead of fellow Holden driver Anton de Pasquale and Ford’s McLaughlin.
In the second 10-lap race at Montreal, Holden’s Chaz Mostert emerged from reverse grid chaos to claim his maiden Eseries win ahead of Waters and Holden’s Zane Goddard.
In the opening Watkins Glen race, de Pasquale emerged triumphant ahead of McLaughlin and van Gisbergen.
And seven-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup completed the round with his first Eseries win ahead of Rossi and McLaughlin.
