Daniel Ricciardo’s former teammate at Renault, Nico Hulkenberg, looks set to be heading for the Formula One exit door after Alfa Romeo confirmed they will be retaining Antonio Giovinazzi.
Hulkenberg had hoped to be offered a lifeline by Alfa Romeo after Renault earlier this year announced he will be replaced by French driver Esteban Ocon.
Ocon spent a year as Mercedes reserve driver but will now join Australian star Ricciardo at Renault on a long contract.
The 32-year-old German started his career in 2010 with Williams before moving to Force India and then Renault in 2017.
Italian Giovinazzi, 25, who has scored four points in his rookie campaign, will continue alongside Kimi Raikkonen at Alfa Romeo next season.
Red Bull are expected to keep Alex Albon while Toro Rosso are set to continue with Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly.
Canadian Nicholas Latifi is the frontrunner to replace the departing Robert Kubica at Williams.
