Kelly Racing confirms Ford Mustang move

Simona De Silvestro’s Supercars career is up in the air after Kelly Racing announced a scale back and manufacturer switch for the 2020 season.

Team boss Todd Kelly confirmed on Tuesday the four-car Nissan set-up in this year’s Supercars campaign would become a two-car team fielding Ford Mustangs.

The drivers are expected to be Rick Kelly and Andre Heimgartner.

The shift ends the six-year Supercars Nissan era for Kelly Racing, although it will continue to run two Altima Supercars in the second-tier Super2 Series from 2020.

The deal will see the Mustang contingent grow from six to eight next season.

“We are excited for the future now we have confirmed the team will run Ford Mustangs in 2020,” Kelly said.

“After 11 seasons in Supercars we step into a Ford Mustang that is a proven race winner and will provide us with our best opportunity for success in the future.

“In this competitive environment it has necessitated a reconsideration of our structure to create the optimal model for the future.”

De Silvestro, who drove a Nissan for Kelly Racing this season, arrived in 2017 as the first full-time female Supercars driver.

But the Swiss talent is off contract and recently signed to Porsche’s Formula E team as a test and development driver in Europe.

De Silvestro is 20th in the Supercars drivers championship before of the Gold Coast 600 later this month.
